FLATLAND BOOK REDESIGN
My aim for this project was to make a slightly satirical, modern interpretation of a dichotmonic class system that exists in society and in particular in Britain.
Flatland is all about putting the inhabitants of the world in their class. Upper, middle and lower class. Fashion and clothes is a way in which class is signalled.
For my project I used semiotics. How we read signs and symbols that acquire meaning from the way they are presented. I wanted to use a visual language that already exists in society based on peoples attitudes to what people wear. I wanted to play on peoples preconceieved ideas about a person based on the clothes or brand they are wearing.
I wanted to present an idea of class by show specific brands like Burberry that people wear in the hope that it will suggest upper class but based on preconceived ideas of these things, actually say something entirely different.
