JIM CARROLL POETRY POSTER

This is a poster I did in college to advertise a night of poetry by author, poet and punk musician Jim Carroll. He was a heroin addict whose his life was portrayed in the movie “The Basketball Diaries.”

The name of the poem I chose was “Catholic Boy." Carroll was a catholic boy who attended an elite private catholic school but he was also a junkie and far from the perfect catholic. I took the title of the poem as my inspiration for the design of my poster. I made a symbol of the cross with the words Catholic Boy. I wanted to juxtapose the symbol of the cross with Carroll’s life as a junkie.

I chose to use Times New Roman for my poster because in my opinion it is a traditional looking font. It almost looks like columns in a church. The title and crucifix design led me to look at bible design and some of the works of Derek Birdsall and Phil Baines. I wanted to make a subtle nod to bible design. One of the things I liked about the bibles I looked at was the lines were numbered. I chose to put beside the number 18 beside the start of my line from the poem. This is because the line I picked is the 18th line from the poem.

FEAR AN LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS

This is a poster I did for a Dublin illustration and image making collective called Pinup. The brief is taken from Hunter S. Thompson's book "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas." I wanted to do a typographic interpretation of the brief to get out of my comfort zone of mainly illustration. I used photos that I had taken myself on holiday in Las Vegas. I wanted to give the poster a vintage movie poster feeling and I also wanted the main typographic elements to read like a shopping list of the various drugs in the excerpt.

The Brief:

"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into locked a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon."

FUTURA POSTER

This is a poster I did in college to advertise Futura Typeface. The basis of the design is the Geometric nature of the typeface. In particular the sharp tip of the N. The colour is a homage to film maker Stanley Kubrick's "Clockwork Orange." The director used the Futura typeface for the titles in his movies. The shape of the design is also a nod to the iconic poster for the movie.
