WE SHALL RISE AGAIN
This piece is a comment on Irish typography and the role it plays in the history of Irish Republicanism and Nationalism. It is a comment on the replacement of nationalism with football.
I wanted to make a political statement about the Thierry Henry handball incident in the World cup qualification playoff match between France and Ireland. In this match Ireland were cheated by a handball by Thierry Henry which the referee and linesman did not see. The result was a national outrage.
I wanted to juxtapose the importance of the republican movement and the importance of political movements with the importance of football. The aim is to make a political piece that seems important but when you look at it closely it is actually about football and the Handball incident. The quote is from one of the men who signed the proclamation of an Irish Republic and took part in the Easter Rising in 1916, James Connolly.
It was included in the Atype Association Typographique Internationale exhibition in Paris in 2010.
